The 20-volt’s lithium-ion batteries provide up to 35 percent more runtime than existing 18-volt lithium-ion battery technology. The included charger has dual voltage capabilities, and it is compatible with both 12-volt max and 20-volt max DEWALT lithium-ion batteries; the DCD785C2 is also compatible with the 3.0 Ah lithium-ion batters that are available as replacement packs or come with the premium tools. Plus, the hammer drill’s high-power, high-efficiency motor delivers 350 unit watts out of maximum power for superior performance in light and medium drilling applications. A 1/2-inch ratcheting chuck with carbide inserts provides superior bit-gripping strength—reducing slippage during high-torque applications—thus providing longer tool life. The hammer drill/driver’s two-speed (0-600 RPM and 0-2,000 RPM) transmission allows users to select the appropriate speed for the job at hand and is up to 30 percent faster than current hammer drill/drivers on the market.Comfort and ConvenienceThe compact hammer drill’s design incorporates a slim handle with contoured grip that extends user comfort during long jobs, and DEWALT’s engineering and design team adjusted the product footprint and weight allocation for ideal balance and a lightweight feel, making the 3.5-pound tool easy to maneuver in tight areas. The bright built-in LED work light above the trigger has a 20-second delay that improves visibility in dimly lit spaces. PowerUpfront Summary/Comparison to 18 Volt:+ Same durability and solid build that DeWalt is known for+ Same power and even longer runtime than DeWalt 18 Volt Ni-Cads+ Much lighter feel, especially in the battery+ More comfortable grip than predecessors I am very impressed with this drill, especially because of its lightweight but long lasting battery. I got it to replace an older 18V XPR DeWalt that is similar (DC987KA). The DCD785 is as fast or faster and is more powerful than the 18 volt, which is impressive since nothing could stop that one. The hammer-drill function works just as good and even with older bits, it rips though concrete very fast. The biggest improvement is the weight. This drill feels like it weighs half as much as the 18V, especially in the battery. Despite the battery's weight and size it runs much longer than my old drill, even when that one was new. This improvement comes from the fact that this drill is powered by a Lithium-Ion battery instead of the Ni-Cad that the older drills used. Since this drill is rated at 1.5Ah and the DC987 was rated at 2.4 Ah, you would think that it wouldn't last longer, but it does. My guess is that the increased range comes from the 20V system instead of 18V or possibly because of an improved efficiency motor and gearing. For me, as long as the range far exceeds the charge time, which it does on this drill, I don't worry too much about capacity, but this drill has it either way. There are some people who are saying that insides of this new 20 Volt battery is identical to the 18 Volt Lithium Ion batteries that DeWalt makes as replacements for its 18 Volt batteries. Whether this is true or not, I don't know, and to me it doesn't really matter. Marketing gimmicks don't really bother me, if the product that they are selling performs the way that it should. This battery, in this drill, runs for a very long time, whether it is really 18 or 20 volts. If you need even more run time than this drill offers, DeWalt has double capacity batteries available. They must just run forever, considering how long the ones that come with it go for. Instead of the stock 1.5 amp hours, the double capacity ones are twice as big at 3.0 amp hours. The "premium" version of this drill comes with them standard. It is the DCD985L2. For me, I prefer the lightweight of the 1.5 amp hour ones that comes with it, and haven't even considered trying the 3aH ones. The charger is compatible and interchangeable with the DeWalt 12 Volt Max Batteries as well. The handle is comfortable. I never minded the wide DeWalt handles, that had to be bulky because of the battery stem, but the new design is very comfortable too. They are better, but the biggest comfort comes from the drill's lightweight. To me, how you hold it isn't as important as how much it weights (or in this case, how much it doesn't).The chuck is easy to use and holds the bit security. It ratchets for a securer fit. This drill has a two speed transmission, as opposed to the three speed on the DC987. For me, slow (0-600 and fast (0-2,000) is fine, since both settings are variable on the trigger. The third setting of 0-1,450 that this drill lacks, isn't something I won't miss at all. If you need three speeds or do a lot of work at the 1,450 rpm range, this might be a factor for you. Some of the other models (like the DCD985 or DCD980) of this drill have three speeds. There isn't that much to say about this drill. It does everything that it is supposed to even better than previous DeWalt models that were already outstanding. I highly recommend it. The only people who won't want to jump on board with this new generation of DeWalt products is those folks that have invested heavily in the previous generation system and don't want to have to deal with two different types of batteries.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful."The Man Drill"By D. HardawayLet me preface this by saying, I'm a girl. I had a different 9.6 volt drill that I had been using for the past few years and it did pretty much everything I needed (some things easier than others) until the squirrel decided to move into my dryer vent and I needed to put up a cover on my brick house. Needless to say, my little drill couldn't begin to drill into the brick. So, when I saw this, I decided to give it a try.The first thing I noticed were the heavy duty latches on the case and I thought, "Wow, this looks like a heavy duty 'man drill' case." I was thrilled when I took the drill out to find that it wasn't heavy at all and the battery packs, being lithium ion, were much smaller than my current drill's battery pack. Overall, this drill weighs about the same or a little less than my less powerful drill and is easily light enough for a 5'4" girl to use. I read the directions (which were clear and about as simple as possible), put the battery in, and pulled the trigger. HOLY COW! I quickly sat it down thinking maybe this was too much drill for me! A few days later, I decided it was time to replace the 2X4 in my fence that had insect damage and to try out my new drill. I was screwing 4" screws through a 2x4 into a 4x4 without any kind of pre-drilling and they were going in like the wood was butter. The drill had so much power, but even with all the power, wasn't stripping the screws out. Once my fence was finished, I realized I was in love with "The Man Drill" as it is now known. There is no way my old drill could have handled those long screws without a battle. My mind immediately went to all the household projects I had done in the past where I struggled with a drill that wasn't powerful enough (hanging mini-blinds, installing child locks into my oak cabinets, etc.) and thought about how much easier those projects would have been if I had had "The Man Drill" then. In the past, I have always had issues with my drill battery being dead. I know I'm not really supposed to, but I got to the point where I just kept it plugged in all the time which was very hard on the battery. I love that this drill comes with two batteries and a charging station. If I have a big job or if one of the batteries is nearly dead, I can be charging the other one while using what is left in the first battery and not lose work time. So, "The Man Drill" is now my new favorite power tool. I will be selling the old drill in my next yard sale. I'm also looking for new things around the house that require drilling so I can play with it. I highly recommend this drill!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Great productBy sparkyI'm a electrician and I wanted somthing lightweight with lots of power. This tool gives me that.
