View largerStrength Defies SizeDEWALT optimized the DCF885C2 so it can handle a variety of applications and withstand daily jobsite wear and tear. Its durable motor delivers 2,800 RPM—up to 43 percent faster than current impact drivers on the market. Research shows that impact drivers are growing in popularity largely because of their smaller size and lack of kickback (or reactionary torque) thanks to the impact mechanism within the tool. Combined with its 5.55-inch length and 2.8-pound weight, this compact impact driver packs a serious punch in a small package.PowerDEWALT-designed electronics have been built into the DCF885L2’s switch to provide maximum life for the tools and batteries by helping to protect them from overheating, overloading, and deep discharge during use. The 20-volt’s lithium-ion batteries provide up to 35 percent more runtime than existing 18-volt lithium-ion battery technology. The included charger has dual voltage capabilities, and it is compatible with both 12-volt max and 20-volt max DEWALT lithium-ion batteries.Ergonomics and Ease of UseThe impact driver included in this kit features a one-handed loading 1/4-inch hex chuck that accepts and holds 1-inch bit tips for convenient fastening in tight spaces. Its all-metal belt hook can be attached to either side of the tool, and the slim handle fits easily into users’ hands, increasing the level of comfort during the course of long jobs. The bright built-in LED work light above the trigger has a 20-second delay that improves visibility in dimly lit spaces.About DEWALT's 20-Volt Max Lithium-Ion ToolsDEWALT’s line of 20-volt max lithium-ion tools features improvements in engineering and design to provide the performance, the ergonomics, and the innovation that contractors require. FergusonJust so we are on the same page, here are the basic differences between a drill, impact driver and hammer drill:-A standard drill just rotates.-An impact driver rotates and applies a rotational tapping.-A hammer drill rotates and hammers the drill along the axis of rotation (i.e., into the material).Impact drivers are at their best in turning screws and nuts, and they are fantastic if you are trying to remove a frozen screw. Imagine nearly stripping a screw and thinking you might need to drill it out, and then using an impact driver that turns it like you're moving through butter. Impact drivers are not my first choice for drilling of any kind, though the manufacturers are happy to sell you small diameter drill bit sets for impact drivers.Impact drivers place increased stress on the bits and use a hexagonal shank. You should purchase bits that are designed for impact drivers. None are included in this kit. The various manufacturers have their own names for these lines of bits (e.g., "impact ready") but these are not proprietary systems (though you do need to get a 1/4" hex shank for this tool). Right now I'm partial to the Milwaukee Tools shockwave bits, but your mileage will vary. You may want to check out the selection at your local hardware store first before you purchase. Bits are a significant investment. You can also buy adaptors that allow you to use a wider variety of bits (e.g. round shank), but that starts to turn the tool (or drill bit) into something it was not designed to be in the first place.I find this particular unit to be very handy and wonderful to use in tight spaces. If I did not already have an assortment of drills, I would be tempted by the more capable models that provide increased speed control. Still, sometimes you just want to get a job done quickly and simply. Not every tool needs to have every feature, and no tool does everything well. And frankly, I don't like to invest too much money on rechargeable tools since I find they have a more limited useful lifespan than corded tools. I still have a fine corded drill from the 1980s, but where is that early Makita rechargeable from the same period...?This driver excels as a compact unit with a minimum of fuss. Charge and go. So far I've had good experience with the batteries; I will report back if they start to go wonky on me. The supplied 1.5 amp hour batteries have been sufficient for my DIY activities. The charger and kit box are fine. I probably don't need to say (but will anyway) that when you buy a cordless tool, you are buying into the battery system and a whole family of tools. You want to avoid buying different battery systems because it is a royal pain. The 20v battery, and this entire line for that matter, represent a new generation of cordless tools for Dewalt. They've been selling the 18v line for a while and it has a big following. The new 20v tools are not backward compatible with 18v, so Dewalt has to convince their old customers to make a significant changeover, though 18v will probably be around for a while. The 20v batteries CAN use the 12v Max charger. Do not be confused by the 20v Max marketing. These have the same voltage as the earlier system (maximum 4 volts per cell, 5 cells per battery, dropping to 3.6 volts when in use... 18 volts), but the electronics are updated and the batteries have higher amp hours (currently $99 for 3 amp hours and $69 for 1.5 amp hours). They moved the electronics from the battery to the tool, supposedly making the batteries less expensive. The main competitors to Dewalt in this category are Milwaukee Tools, Makita, Bosch, and Rigid.Cheers 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful.Could there be a better impact driver!?By JJEvery time I use this little gem, a smile comes across my face. I can't help it. This is has got to be my favorite power tool in my collection. While it can't take the place of every type of drill job, this DeWalt 20 Volt MAX impact driver hasLithium Ion 1/4-inch Impact Driver has a compact (5.55-inch front to back), lightweight (2.8-pounds) design fits into tight areas. It has three LED lights and has fast become my tool of choice. The LED lights are a nice touch and I find this thoughtful addition something I depend on over and over. It makes me wonder why this wasn't more widely available earlier.... and it is a feature I would demand on any decent power tool today (where light will be an issue). There is even a 20 sec delay after trigger is released, that provides visibility without shadows. This is truly a one-hand loading impact driver with 1/4-inch hex chuck (accepts 1-inch bit tips). The packaging says that it produces 3200 impacts per minute and has a max torque of 117 foot/pounds. All I know is that it is light, maneuverable, has enough torgue to get the job done fast, without needing to pre-drill and without stripping screws. I love that it comes with two batteries and charger for those bigger jobs, but the Lith-ion battery just lasts and lasts. I am using the standard 1.5 amp batteries and love it. (DeWalt has the 3.0 amp model available as well). This is my first DeWalt product and I couldn't be more satisfied. I have owned other quality power tools from Milwaukee and Makita and this DeWalt makes them look and perform like toys. That is perhaps too harsh, but it is an accurate representation of my preferences since using this DeWalt. I believe that you will likewise be quite satisfied with your purchase. You might consider the 3.0 Amp version if your really need the additional power and don't mind the added weight DEWALT DCF885L2 20-Volt MAX Lithium Ion 1/4-Inch Impact Driver Kit, 3.0 Ah 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.Excellent ProductBy Duffer. This impact driver comes with two 20 volt lightweight lithium ion batteries, a battery charger and a case. It is small, light weight, powerful and is a perfect fit in the hand. Bits are simply pushed into the chuck and are securely held in place. Removal is accomplished with a slight foward pull of the outer chuck ring. Simplicity personified. It has three LED lights which provide an unencumbered view. Using a standard 1" bit makes it easier to work in tight places. This is a suprisingly powerful tool for its size. The batteries are of the slide-in type so insertion and removal in the driver and the charger are easily handled. This is a highly recommended addition to any ones tool collection. I have a number of Dewalt tools and this is one of the best if not the best.Although the tool is a masterful creation the user information is in the dumbest format ever conceived by man (or woman although, in honesty, I never met a woman that that would do anything that stupid). Instead of the convenient sized multi-page user manual that most knowledgeable tool suppliers provide, DeWalt has decided that all information should be provided on a single sheet of paper measuring approximately 1/2 acre. One would need a pair of field glasses to read all the information. By hooking a back hoe to my tractor I was able to lop off the non-English portion and cut the sheet down to about a 1/4 acre. It is inconcievable to me how a company that can create such a fine tool can also win the award for the most idiotic instruction sheet in the history of user instruction provisioning. Maybe they save one or two cents on a $220 item. Go figure.See all 12 customer reviews...
