My needs have changed as I've grown in projects, and my old cheap black and decker sets have long since been replaced by Dewalts. I've had the Dewalt 18V kits for several years and I've been very happy with them. They last through most small jobs with one charge. They are solid, beefy, and have plenty of power, but are also pretty heavy. I nearly converted over to the Li-ion packs, but the price always kept me from it. Then came the 12v max line, I thought they were perfect for nearly every small job and home use. They are light, solid, and have surprising power in a compact size. The charge they hold may not last the entire project, but the packs are so cheap you can buy a couple extra to finish up (and not break your wallet).Well now we have the 20v Max line. To be honest, if I didn't need to buy some new 18v packs, I wouldn't have even considered getting these. But I did, and I'm not disappointed. They all have the same solid, beefy Dewalt design, but now they are light and compact as well. They appear to be nearly as small/compact as the 12v max tools. And these tools hold a charge for much longer than their 12v cousins. (Sorry, I haven't done a comparison test on how long they all last, 12 vs 18 vs 20).The new Impact driver is equal to the 18v version but lighter. Function and size seem nearly the same, but the 20v is slightly smaller and a good bit lighter (the 12v is smaller and lighter then any of them).The hammer drill is the same as the 18v version, but it is lighter as well. Size and function seem to be exactly the same, just lighter. (no 12v hammer drill)The circular saw appears to also be the same as the 18v. Performance seems just the same as the 18v version (good enough for quick cuts in contruction lumber, but I wouldn't want to have to use it for all day jobs or on pressure treated lumber).Charging seems much faster (about 30min or so, but don't hold me to it as I didn't discharge the pack fully).The light is a new design, with just a rotating head, function is fine, but I really liked the old snake head of the previous 18v version better.The new reciprocating saw is the only tool I felt was not on par with the 18v version. It is a much lighter and slightly smaller design, but it no longer has the pivoting head and adjustable guard, and the blade lock is stiffer. Performance wise, it still works just as well as the 18v. After thinking about it, I realized that I never actually used the pivot function on the old 18v anyway, so I suppose I can't complain about the loss of it. But if that is a function you needed for your work, then you will be disappointed. NOTE: I just read the manual and found that this kit has the DCS381 model saw which doesn't have the 4 position blade and adjustable guard. Model DCS380 has the 4 position blade. So if you need that feature don't get this kit. It looks like just the two piece kit Dewalt DCK292L2 and the single saw kit DCS380L1 have the DCS380 model saw with the 4 position blade feature.The bag is the soft bag, which is nice for the lightness, but not nearly as protective. I guess you just have to adapt to it.In summary, I'd recommend this set if you are new or moving up from the inexpensive (and usually low quality) brands. If you're already heavy into the old 18v stuff, I wouldn't bother with a switch until you have to replace them. In all fairness, I have not had much experience with other brands kits (some Milwaulkee, a Bosch, and a Makita) I'm sure they are all great sets, but I was already using Dewalt so I stuck with them.7 of 10 people found the following review helpful.As good as you can get in this price rangeBy ScOObydooIf you are used to purchasing cheap stuff from the local hardware store, then a $580 kit is going to scare you - and rightfully so. This is a lot of money for a set of power tools. That said, if you actually do more than just hang a couple of shelves, then this kit is obviously not going to let you down. Lets start with the basics:The box: the box this kit comes in is a piece of crap. Upon arrival, the inside soft bag was already poking through three of the corners. It is taped on the tops only, so the corners will most likely rip in transit. That said, all the tools are quite well packaged inside the soft-bag, and some of the parts even come in a bubble envelope, so you don't run much risk of damage. In the kit, you'll find the charger, two battery packs, the drill, impact driver, circular saw, reciprocating saw and an LED light. It also includes a basic saw blade for the circular saw, but no bits and no blades for the reciprocating saw, which is a bit of a shame. The drill is simply incredible - this thing weighs a ton, yet is comfortable and extremely powerful. I took it for a spin on several materials, including the concrete floor of my garage, and it had absolutely no problems with what I threw at it. The impact wrench is a tough one -- it'll help get screws out, but don't expect to use it to loosen the lug nuts of your car. The LED light is relatively bright, but I get more lumens from a $20 Costco LED flashlight. Both saws are what you'd expect from a kit like this; powerful. Speed control on the reciprocating saw is a bit lagging, and its lowest speed can be a bit too slow to get things started. The charger has one minor issue that annoyed me -- its LED is RED only. It communicates with you with flashes, so when it is full, it stays fully red. Call me a whiner, but I prefer a charger that shows green, just like every other charger on the market...Other than this, the 20V "MAX" is of course mostly marketing, as the cells themselves probably only produce 18V (hence the "MAX" part -- they will show 20V without load). Still, this is one killer power tool set, and if you do some "real" work around the house, this kit will NOT let you down.7 of 10 people found the following review helpful.Simply amazing.By Method2Madness "Alex"As most men are, I'm an AVID fan of power tools! That being said, I've had (and still have) more than my fair share of different tools and brands, and Dewalt is right up there with my favorite brands. Thus when the DCK590L2 Kit became available in Vine, I was all to happy to give it a whirl. Although I received this via Vine, I'm ABSOLUTELY NOT predisposed to giving a product a 5 star rating and this being a new battery system, I definitely wanted to give it a thorough workout. Which I absolutely did. I currently own a Hitachi 18v NiCad Kit (Circ saw, drill, flashlight and impact driver), an older Dewalt 18v NiCad kit( hammer drill, circ saw, recip saw and impact driver), and my (previous to this kit, favorite) a Makita 18v LiIon kit (drill, impact driver and recip saw). Oh and a $50 Harbor Freight 18v NiCad kit(drill, impact driver, circ saw, recip saw and flashlight) which although was surprisingly decent, is now in the hands of a female who needed power tools. ;). The Makita is an AMAZING piece of kit, and although not *quite* as powerful and robust as this 20v Max system, is still one of the best performers in the industry today. So for me to call this kit my new absolute favorite is saying a lot. -The DCD985 20V MAX Hammer Drill: I used this to drill numerous holes in concrete for 1/2'' x 2-3/4'' Wedge Anchors and it was AMAZINGLY easy. The drill had enough torque and power to effortlessly drill 15+ holes like it was corded. I then moved on to using it to drill 6, 1/2" holes into a steel unibody frame to mount a Reese hitch on my fathers minivan. Again, plenty of torque and power. Although these 2 jobs were a couple of days apart, I was still on the initial charge. This 3.0ah battery, no joke, seems like it'll run forever. This thing is quite heavy and beastly, however. So for the smaller jobs, I still see the Makita getting a lot of use. -The DCF885 20V MAX 1/4-inch impact driver: God I love these things. The Impact Driver is, no joke, one of the BEST inventions ever. And this one flat out performs. I drove HUNDREDS of deck screws with this thing and each and every turn felt like I was driving into butter. Again, battery life is amazing and the 3 LED lights around the chuck really help out when driving into light challenged areas. The DCF885 really blew away the other Impact Drivers in my stable (including it's 18v brother), which again is saying a LOT. -The DCS381 20V MAX reciprocating saw was used to do everything from demo work (wood/metal studs, drywall, etc) to rather large tree limbs and again really impressed me. Definitely the best of the 3 that I currently own. Battery life was amazing as well. Although, I would definitely NOT reccomend using a 1.5ah battery on either of the saws. -The DCS393 20V MAX circular saw was used to cut SEVERAL pieces of timber for a deck that was being built and was absolutely up to the task. Great power, with great battery life. With as much wood as we were cutting, I figured I'd have to use a corded saw, but both batteries (one swapped while the other charged) managed to make it through the whole build. Although for oddly enough, the blade that was included in the kit was rather dull and had to be replaced almost immediately. -The DCL040 20V MAX LED work light is actually QUITE bright. Easy on par with any of the mid-high end 1 watt LED flashlights currently available. -The charger is a high speed charger, takes about 30 minutes to charge and can be used to charge the 12 volt MAX batterys as well as 20v. A nice touch. All-In-All, I continue to be highly impressed with this setup. Although pricey, you definitely get your moneys worth. Black & Decker continues to churn out top quality, industrial grade tools with their Dewalt line. See all 4 customer reviews...
