I use my cordless tools hard, all day, every day. My older XRP batteries were starting to get tired so I decided to go w/ the new Lithium Ion technology. Let's just say I'm less than pleased with them. They don't last nearly as long as a new XRP does, especially under heavy torque. I'm constantly having to change and charge them. I expected much more for twice the price. It's possible that they work better with the tools they are designed for, but if you are thinking of using them as replacements for XRP, don't bother. If you use it to put up pictures and you want to have the "new thing" go for it. If you actually use your tools, a new XRP is twice as good for half the price.13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. My 'girlie' perspective on DeWalt ION batteriesBy JOLARAThis battery is great! We decided to buy a couple of these DeWalt ION/NANO batteries to see if we noticed the difference in all the areas that are important to us so as to justify the expense...in our opinion, it's proved itself! It may not fit the older hand held power tools perfectly (not sure why DeWalt didn't manufacture them to fit?) but you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover! The front and rear overhang is about a 1/2" difference on both sides but it doesn't interfere with the tools' ability or stability therefore the tools that are able, still easily stand on their own - Flourescent lights, Drills, Impacts etc. . The only BAD part of that is you may feel the need/urge to use this as an excuse to buy the newer power tools DeWalt now has to offer that fit the ION/NANO batteries like a glove! :0) Reason I added 'girlie' perspective in my title is simple, who cares how the battery looks in older hand held tools!!! I regularily use DeWalt power tools and these batteries are a bit lighter than the regular 18V and for those particularily tough jobs, they get the job done quicker because they last longer. Example; For me, it makes driving 50- 2 1/2" tap screws into 1/4"+ thick square steel tubing so much easier and quicker than before. I say quicker because they don't run out of juice as quick as the other batteries. (I'm a woman and not as strong as most men so it takes me a bit longer for certain jobs such as drilling/driving screws into steel tubing) For those out there like me, not having to break my concentration because I have to stop what I am doing to replace the power pack often or having to wait for it to recharge if you only have one available is greatly appreciated. The charger fits the ION batteries as well as the older 18V ones. Just as another reviewer mentioned the ION batteries just 'sit' in the charger as the older models/chargers they kind of snapped in snuggly. However, the light is easily viewed so you know right away your battery is in and is charging. The adjustment of your battery just sitting in the charger vs. being clicked in was a mental challenge the first time only because it wasn't the norm, otherwise no big deal. It's not like it wiggles or easily falls out, it just doesn't click in. Our older regular 18V batteries have started losing their charge rather quickly after about 4 years of medium/heavy use. As the time comes to replace the older worn out packs, I plan to continue buying the ION battery charger sets when they go on sale/special deal due to their expense. In my opinion, you can never have too many batteries or chargers handy. More often than not, my husband and I are both using the power tools at the same time for different chores in different locations and enjoy having a battery for every tool being used.Bottom line, two thumbs up!15 of 18 people found the following review helpful.Much lighter than old XRP and works great on their toolsBy Martin TaylorUnlike some previous reviewers, I have these batteries and have used them with my old DeWalt XRP tools. I bought them with the impact gun / hammerdrill kit (I have this kit for the regular XRP, needed a second). In comparison with the old batteries, they're great - they're lighter than the old batteries and last longer. I haven't run one long enough to know how many recharges it will last. The tools designed for these batteries are smaller than the older tools and a touch lighter. So the old tools have about a half inch overhang in the front and back of the new batteries - it looks a little silly, but otherwise who cares? they stay on very securely. They're sturdy. My only real complaint is that they don't sit very snugly in the charger. This is because there is a very small plastic rim missing from the old XRP batteries. They still charge fine, but you actually have to look at the charger's LED to make sure there's solid contact. Poor work, DeWalt, but not a big deal in my mind.Briefly, from about 2 weeks daily use:Pros (that I can personally verify - marketing also claims they will recharge many more times):-Smaller than old XRP battery-Lighter-Tool lasts longer on a chargeCons:-Old XRP tools have very small overhang out the front and back-Have to actually look at the charger to make sure they're chargingOverall, very pleased. Would give 4-1/2 stars, the only reason it's not 5 is how it sits on the chargerSee all 13 customer reviews...
